Fix Beebo connection problems

When your phone cannot reach Beebo, the cause is nearly always one of a few things: the PC is asleep, the phone is on a different network, something is blocking the port, or your home internet does not allow direct connections. Work through the steps in order; each one says what you should see.

Coming soon Status: A built-in Connection Doctor that checks all of this for you and offers a fix button is planned, but it is not in the current version. Today, the checks below and the connection test in Get Started are the tools.

What your phone says, and what it means

MessageUsually meansGo to
“Can’t reach the server — is it running, and is the port right?”Typed an address that is not answering: PC off or asleep, different Wi-Fi, wrong address, or blocked port.Steps 1 to 3

The checks, in order

  1. Is the PC on, awake and running Beebo?

Everything streams from your PC, so if it is off, asleep or Beebo is closed, nothing works. Look for Beebo’s window or its icon near the clock. Beebo does not yet start by itself when Windows starts, so after a restart, open it.

To stop Windows sleeping while plugged in, open Windows Settings › System › Power & sleep (Windows 10) or Power & battery › Screen and sleep (Windows 11) and set “When plugged in, put my device to sleep after” to Never.

Next release Beebo gets a Keep Beebo available section in Settings with “Start Beebo when I sign in to Windows”, a line saying whether it is keeping the PC awake, and an Open Windows sleep settings button.

What you’ll see: Beebo’s window on the PC, or its icon by the clock. If you cannot find either, open Beebo from the Start menu.

  2. At home: are you on the same Wi-Fi, with the right address?

Your phone must be on the same Wi-Fi as the PC, with mobile data not standing in for it. Guest networks, and some public or hotel Wi-Fi, keep devices from seeing each other. On the PC, open Get Started and click Refresh to see the current address, then type it exactly, including :47811.

What you’ll see: An address like 192.168.1.50:47811 on the PC. After a router restart it may have changed.

  3. Is a firewall blocking Beebo?

The Windows installer adds a firewall rule named “Beebo Entertainment” for TCP port 47811. Check it in Windows Security › Firewall & network protection › Allow an app through firewall. If you use another company’s security suite, it has its own firewall: allow TCP port 47811 there.

What you’ll see: “Beebo Entertainment” in the list, ticked. If a security program prompted you when Beebo first started and you clicked Cancel, that would explain a blocked phone.

  4. Away from home: use your beebo.tv address, with Beebo signed in

The local 192.168… address only works on your home Wi-Fi. Away from home, use your yourname.beebo.tv address, or your home’s name in the app’s Home box. The PC must be signed in to your Beebo account; until then Beebo says “Sign in to your Beebo account first. Then this computer gets its own beebo.tv address.” Look at Settings › Your Beebo address for any problem it reports.

What you’ll see: On Get Started, step 4 shows your address and “It’s online now.”

  5. Run the connection test

Use Get Started › Test your connection, or Settings › Connection › Re-run test. It checks watching at home, then away from home with your phone on mobile data, and tells you which route your phone used. You can also try the browser-based Will Beebo work on your internet? check.

What you’ll see: “Your phone connected. Direct connection.” means you are done. A failure moves you to step 6.

  6. Direct connection blocked: shared address, two routers, or closed ports

Beebo asks your router to open its ports itself. If that fails, the test may say “Your home has two routers in a row” or “Your internet provider shares one internet address between many homes”. Then, in order of effort:

    a) Turn on UPnP (sometimes called NAT-PMP) in your router and test again. b) Forward UDP ports 47820–47829 to the PC by hand. c) With two routers, forward on both, or put the provider’s modem in bridge mode. d) If your provider shares one address between many homes (carrier-grade NAT), no router setting will help; asking the provider for a public address usually does, or you can use your own Cloudflare relay or Beebo Relay. e) Choose Home only for now and watch on your home Wi-Fi.

What you’ll see: A result of “Your home network blocks direct connections” with four options underneath.

  7. Try a different network

Some mobile, office and hotel networks block direct connections even when your home is fine. Switch the phone between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try again. If one network fails and another works, the failing network is the problem, and a relay is the fix.

What you’ll see: Either it connects, or the same message repeats on every network you try. In that case, go back to steps 5 and 6.

Connection Doctor: coming soon

Coming soon A Connection Doctor is planned: one place that checks whether Beebo is running, whether the firewall rule is there, what your local address is, whether beebo.tv can see you and whether your router opened its ports, with a fix button next to each problem. It is not in the current version and there is no release date. This page will be updated when it ships.

If something goes wrong

It worked yesterday and not today

Most often the PC restarted or went to sleep, Beebo was not reopened, or the router gave the PC a new local address. Check steps 1 and 2. If you use the yourname.beebo.tv address it does not depend on your local address.

Only some of my family cannot connect away from home

Away access is set per person. The owner can check it in the Users tab; see Family and profiles. A person also needs to sign in once at home with their usual password, or use a temporary away pass the owner can generate.

Video connects but keeps stopping

Try a lower picture quality with the gear button in the player, since the PC then converts the video to something smaller while it plays. Your home internet’s upload speed limits how much can reach you away from home.
