Connect your Android phone to Beebo

The Beebo Android app signs in to the PC you set up, using its address and your username and password. Today you type the address; the QR code on the PC opens the address in a browser but does not sign the app in.

Available now Status: The Android app is available from this site (Android 1.38 at the time of writing). A Google Play listing is in closed testing. iPhone and iPad use a browser for now; there is no iPhone app yet.

About the QR code

Typing is the way that works today. The PC’s Get Started screen shows a QR code, and some of its wording says to tap “Scan QR to connect” in the phone app. The Android app does not have that scanner yet. If you scan the code with your phone’s normal camera app, it opens the address in a web browser, which is handy for the browser viewer but does not sign the app in. We plan to add a scan button to the app; there is no date. Until then, type the address as shown in step 3.

Step by step

  1. Install the Android app

    On the phone, open the Get Beebo section and tap Download for Android. Your phone may ask permission to install apps from your browser: allow it, then tap the downloaded file. Android calls this an “unknown source” because the app does not come from the Play Store yet.

    What you’ll see: Beebo opens on a screen headed Beebo Entertainment that says “Sign in once, at home or away.”

  2. Find your PC’s address

    On the PC, open Beebo and look at Get Started, step 3, Connect your phone. Put the phone on the same Wi-Fi as the PC.

    What you’ll see: A few numbers with a colon, like 192.168.1.50:47811, next to a QR code labelled “Scan to connect”. Click Refresh if it says “Finding this computer’s address…”.

  3. Fill in the three boxes

    In the app, type the address into Home. In Username and Password, use the account you made in Get started on Windows, or the account the owner made for you. Tick Show password if typing blind is going wrong.

    Ignore the Beebo hub account box further down the screen. It is for watch parties, not for signing in to your library.

    What you’ll see: The Home box explains itself: “Your home’s name (like thesmiths or thesmiths.beebo.tv), or the email of whoever pays for Beebo.” You can also type the address.

  4. Tap Sign in

    Tap Sign in. Beebo connects to your PC directly when you are on the same Wi-Fi.

    What you’ll see: Your library appears, with Continue Watching, Search and the rest along the bottom. See the illustrated tour for where things are.

  5. Use the same app away from home

    Once you have signed in at home, the app can also sign in from anywhere with your home’s name (like thesmiths or thesmiths.beebo.tv) in the Home box. The PC has to be on and signed in to Beebo. Watch away from home explains the options and what they cost.

    What you’ll see: “Connecting to your home…” while it finds the PC, then your library.

iPhone, iPad and other devices

If something goes wrong

It says “Can’t reach the server — is it running, and is the port right?”

The phone could not find the PC at that address. Check that the PC is on, awake and running Beebo, that the phone is on the same Wi-Fi, and that you typed the address exactly as Get Started shows it, including the :47811 at the end. If that all looks right, see Fix connection problems.

The address changed since yesterday

Home routers can hand out a new local address after a restart. Open Get Started on the PC and click Refresh to see the current one. You can also reserve the PC’s address in your router’s settings (often called a DHCP reservation).

Sign in fails with a username or password error

Use the username and password the owner made for you on the PC, not the password of whoever pays for Beebo. The Owner sign-in link is for the owner’s Beebo account email and password. Owners can add or reset people in the Users tab; see Add & manage people.

I only want to look around first

The sign-in screen has a Look around without a server button. It opens a sample library, plus the games and Campsite tools, with no computer needed.
